Then there is the Savior’s own plea to His Father to remove the cup, followed by the most significant “nevertheless” in human history. “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39).

Let there be more notwithstandings, and going to other villages, and neverthelesses in our lives. To live thus is to master one of the lovely stairs in our ascent into being and becoming. They are the mark of spiritual maturity and awareness. They carry with them the assurance that we are pleasing to the Stair Builder, for He set the great example of these Himself.
